As many of you know, the export pipeline to Mexico has effectively ground to a halt due to the New World Screwworm emergency and resulting livestock restrictions.
This is a major victory.
For years, we have fought to expose the truth behind the slaughter pipeline and advocate for humane alternatives. Today, that pipeline is more vulnerable than it has been in decades.
But with that victory comes a challenge.
The horses already in the system are now stuck.
Many traders and middlemen purchased horses expecting to move them through the export pipeline. Now that the border has effectively closed, many are turning to social media, posting heartbreaking images and emotional appeals asking horse lovers to pay inflated prices to “save” these horses.
We understand the instinct.
Every one of us wants to help.
But we must be careful not to feed the very system we are trying to end.
This is why we are proud to stand alongside Horse Plus Humane Society and its founder Tawnee Preisner, who has spent more than two decades rescuing horses and exposing the realities of the slaughter pipeline.
Horse Plus Humane has proposed a practical solution that helps horses without rewarding the system that profits from them.
Their buyout program focuses on securing horses at approximately $550 per horse — a figure that reflects the average amount many traders have invested in the horse through auction purchases, transportation, and holding costs.
This is not about paying inflated “ransom” prices.
This is not about funding the slaughter pipeline.
This is about creating a pathway to safety while removing the financial incentive that has fueled this industry for decades.
At approximately $550 per horse, traders are generally recovering their investment rather than generating substantial profits. More importantly, the horse is removed from the pipeline and can be given a humane future.
These horses can then receive:
🐴 Rescue and rehabilitation
🐴 Veterinary care
🐴 Placement with reputable rescues
🐴 Adoption opportunities
🐴 Or, when necessary, humane euthanasia to end suffering with dignity
Instead of feeding the monster, we can help dismantle it.
That is why Believe Ranch & Rescue is committing $10,000 to support Horse Plus Humane Society’s buyout efforts.
Our contribution alone can help secure approximately 18 horses.
